7 Fashion Tips For More Confidence in the Workplace

If you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you do good.
— Georges St-Pierre

You spend most of your life at work so why not invest in your wardrobe. One of the most important aspects of style is confidence. The confidence to wear what you want, to stand out amongst the crowd, express your personality or to simply be comfortable with who you are can change your outlook on work-life. So I thought I’d share my top 7 tips to help boost your workplace fashion confidence:

Review your workplace dress code.

Business professional, business casual or a “Google” like dress code are very different. Understanding your company’s perimeters will help to find practical pieces for your professional wardrobe.

Separate your work clothes from your regular wardrobe.

Not only does this make life easier in the morning, but it gives you a clear idea of what your overall work style is. Bleeding your personal life wardrobe into what you wear to work may make you feel like you are always on the clock.

Dress for the position you want, not the position you have

Start with a clean slate.

Donate or throw away clothes you dislike. Clothes that do not fit anymore or clothes that simply do not flatter you. It is almost impossible to feel good if you don’t like what you are wearing.

Learn your shape and then EMBRACE it!

All body types are beautiful, but you have to believe it first before anyone else will. Whether apple shape, like me or pear shape you can find outfits that will flatter you. Be kind to yourself and tell yourself you look good daily.

Keep the Classics.

A black, navy and gray suit at a minimum. Have something simple and get it tailored. Preferably suits that can easily be swamped around and then add your own personal flare with a colorful blouse, pretty broach or a flashy shoe.

Find a Signature Style

My first position after moving to the DMV, 99% of the time I wore Calvin Klein dresses from Burlington Coat Factory. Why? Because they fit well, are easy to put on, affordable and have an array of designs and colors to choose from. It was my signature and I felt good. A signature style that represents your personality will build your self-esteem. Whether it’s loud blazers, scarves, Dockers, or vests, find your thing.

Create an inspiration board.

Look around, use social platforms like Pinterest to provide inspiration and then add your own personal style to it. Remember #4 to avoid comparing your body to models but definitely use professional style tips to help build your wardrobe.
